This house is a stunning, eclectic interpretation of contemporary Japanese – Californian architecture: A soaring, elevated and tiled roofline, walls of burnished, glowing wood, and a wrap – around viewing veranda area.  An elegant carriage house, built in the same architectural tradition, can be seen in the distance.

The landscape design for the entry garden had to blend in with the architectural elements of the house, provide a welcoming atmosphere as well as offer a turn around area for cars.

Boulder outcropping walls, terracing and a gravel path with stone steps lead to a large, sweeping lawn and rear garden areas. A wide variety of drought tolerant, meadow- like plant material was selected to complement, define and celebrate the setting throughout the seasons.

Ann is so wonderful to work with! She has an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and a superb understanding of color and texture (after all, she is a fine painter as well). She started our project by sitting down with me and talking, looking at books and gardens, seeking to know my preferences but also opening my eyes to new possibilities.
